New River Gorge National River

Do you know that the New River is the second oldest river in the world?

Well it is! Only the Nile River itself is older. It is also one of only two rivers in the world that flow north.

If you think these facts are interesting just wait until you are looking 900+ feet down from an overlook! Running along the basin of the nationally protected New River Gorge rolls this majestic track of water. Looking down this river seems tranquil, but don't be fooled! The New River is home to West Virginia's longest whitewater rafting season!

Wonder where the bridge on the back of the West Virginia state quarter is? It is right in our area! The New River Gorge Bridge is the second longest freestanding arch bridge in the world. Just after you pass over this bridge you will have the opportunity to pull over and take in the views. The New River Gorge overlook is filled with beautiful views and tons of fun facts. If you are looking to take the perfect photo with the best West Virginia mountain backdrop bring along your camera, the overlook is the best photo opportunity in the area. This stop is a true MUST in any West Virginia vacation.

The New River Gorge Bridge is also home to Southern West Virginia's famous Bridge Day. Scheduled annually in October this festival is the only day of the year that free base jumping is permitted from this famous bridge. Exciting views of the "bridge jumpers" are available from the bridge or water below. One of the most popular whitewater trips of the year is on this day when you can see the jumpers from a view you can't get anywhere else.
