The Gauley River is home to two different sections, and neither is for the timid. The Gauley River's water flow, created by a seasonal release of the Summersville Dam, begins the first weekend after Labor Day, and continues for six weekends.
While this may be a short season the adventure is anything but short! Dropping more than 668 feet through 28 miles of rugged terrain, the Gauley River boasts a complex stretch of whitewater and features more than 100 rapids.
The Upper Gauley is home to technical runs, and when coupled with an incredible volume of water has some seriously huge waves. Its vigorous rapids, scenic quality and inaccessibility combine to make the Upper Gauley River one of the premier whitewater rafting rivers in the world.
A Southern West Virginia Upper Gauley trip is not for those who just want to try their hand at a first time adventure sport, this is for the real river enthusiast. Prior rafting experience is not required to take an Upper Gauley River trip, but is strongly recommended.
The Lower Gauley River is a full speed ahead adventure, while it may not be the adventure of the Upper Gauley, it still provides for a great rafting experience.
If one trip is not enough, trips that start at the top of the river, and run both Upper and Lower portions of the river are available.
Gauley River whitewater rafting trips begin in the morning with a safety briefing, and equipment distribution. Bus transportation to your river put in area is provided by the river company starting at the company's base camp. Upon arriving at the river you will meet your friendly and well-trained guide. You will begin by jumping right in your boat and learning a few basic rafting commands. A river side picnic lunch is provided as part of your trip.
